Questions to Ask a Therapist
Remember: This is essentially a job interview, and you, as the client, are the employer. It’s important to pick the right candidate. You do NOT have to go with the first therapist you meet with on your journey of self-growth.
Try to schedule a consultation call prior to your first appointment to ask some of these important questions.
Questions:
What are your specialties?
What kinds of clients do you find that you work best with?
What is your prior experience working with someone like me? (Referring to age, gender expression, sexual orientation, immigration status, race, ethnicity, and/or other identifying factors)
What experience do you have in working with [concern you would like support around]?
What does a typical session look like?
Do you see your own therapist? If not, what support systems do you have in place to process that things that you experience/hear in sessions?
How do you handle issues of transference and bias?
